Author Questions

Are you rich?
Obviously the more books you sell the more money you make. So while I'm not in the JK Rowling or Bill Gates league I do earn a very good six-figure income as a writer.

Are you married?
No.

Do you have kids?
No.

Do you have pets?
Not unless you include the mice that keep coming into my kitchen.

Do you have brothers and sisters?
I've got a big brother who's eight years older than me, and two sisters who are even older but would probably bash me if I said by how much.

Where are you from?
I grew up in Tufnell Park in London and I now live a few miles away in Crouch End.

Where did you go to school?
My primary school was St Johns Upper Holloway and my secondary school was called Acland Burghley.

Do you still work as a private investigator?
No, I 've been a full time writer since July 2005.

Where do you get your ideas from?
I get asked this question all the time and it drives me nuts, because I don't really know the answer!

I usually start by picking a topic for a book - like cocaine dealing for CHERUB: Class A - and the ideas slowly come together as I learn about the subject.

What was your inspiration to write books?
I've always read loads, but when I was about 12/13 I got fed up with all the kids' books, but I was still a bit young to really get into adult books.

So my starting point for CHERUB: The Recruit was to try and write the book that I was searching for when I was thirteen years old.

How long does it take you to write each book?
It takes 4-5 months from starting my research to finishing the first draft.

The first month of this is research. I usually read lots of books, occasionally I also interview people (like retired police officers or swimming instructors), and I do research at the British Library, or the newspaper library at Colindale.

Next I come up with a detailed plan that says what is going to happen in every chapter. When everything is all planned out, I start actually writing the book, which takes around two months.

How long did it take to get your first book published?
I finished writing CHERUB: The Recruit in early 2001. I then sent it to two agents and one of them took me on.

After doing some more work on the book with my agent, we sent it off to a bunch of children's publishers in September 2002.

After some rejection letters, the nice people at Hodder decided to buy it. Sadly they didn't give me one of those seven figure advances you're always reading about in the newspapers…

What is your favourite book?
I love Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. I've read it about ten times and it still cracks me up. My other favourite is In Cold Blood by Truman Capote.

I was an Asterix nut when I was a kid. The best kids' book I've read recently are The Hunger games by Suzanne Collins and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson.

What books do you really hate?
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I read this for my English GCSE. By the time I'd spent four months reading, re-reading and writing essays on it I wanted to travel back in time and kick Charles bloody Dickens in the nuts.

Website Questions

I signed up for updates. Why don't I receive any messages?
We send out e-mails and information to everyone who joins CHERUB. There are several reasons why you may not receive them:

1. You have anti spam software that blocks them – try turning it off or playing with the settings, but ask permission first!
2. Your e-mail provider thinks they're spam – have a look in your spam folder.
3. Your e-mail provider is blocking our messages before you receive them – some providers (Hotmail in particular) block certain kinds of messages. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to prevent this.

Does Robert Muchamore really answer e-mails personally?
Yes, I read every e-mail I receive and reply personally.

So how come me and my friend got almost the same reply?
I get between 10 and 20 messages on a typical day. A lot of them ask the same questions, and rather than type the same answers hundreds of times I copy and paste standard answers to questions such as ‘When is the next book out?' or ‘Can I be in the CHERUB movie?'.

Cherub Books

How many more CHERUB books are there going to be and when are they released?
CHERUB is a seventeen book series. The first, The Recruit was published in April 2004. The final book, New Guard was released in June 2016.

Will any of the old characters like Lauren and Kerry feature the newer CHERUB books?
Yes. Although they're not the main characters anymore, you'll still see the classic CHERUB characters cropping up in the new series.

What does CHERUB stand for?
Charles Henderson's Espionage Research Unit B. The B refers to the fact that it is the second unit founded by Henderson, the first being the Espionage Research Unit, which is depicted in the Henderson's Boys prequel series.

Will you ever put more bonus stories on the website?
Possibly, but as I've written more books in the CHERUB series it's become harder to come up with enough ideas and I've saved all my ideas for the books themselves.

What is CHERUB: Dark Sun?
Dark Sun was a 118 page limited-edition CHERUB story released in March 2008 to celebrate World Book Day. As it is no longer widely available, fans can now download Dark Sun for free from the members area of CHERUB campus. There is also a special edition 'Dark Sun and Other Stories,' which included Dark Sun and a bunch of other stories.

When will a certain book be released in my country? (Except the USA)
CHERUB is published in more than 30 countries and it's impossible for us to track release dates and schedules in every one of them.

Try contacting your local bookseller, or checking the website of the publisher in your country to find out when the next book is coming.

When will the next CHERUB book be released in the USA?
Simon Pulse began re-releasing the CHERUB books from the beginning in April 2010. The bad news is that it's going to take them a few years before they get to the later books in the series.

The only option for American fans is to import the books from the UK or Canada using an online retailer. Unfortunately this is quite an expensive option.

Where can I get a CHERUB T-shirt?

Can I have a character in a CHERUB book named after me?
Sadly I get too many requests to be able to do this for everyone who asks. However, we occasionally hold competitions at events and in CHERUB News where the main prize is to have a character named after you in a book.

What age range are CHERUB books aimed at?
I usually say that CHERUB is meant for kids aged eleven and upwards. However, kids abilities and interests vary widely and I regularly meet kids aged nine and ten who read and enjoy my books.

Why do your books have a ‘Not suitable for younger readers,' logo and what does it mean?
The logo was added at the request of a UK supermarket. Unlike dedicated book stores, supermarkets don't have enough space to make separate sections for older children. The logo is designed to prevent the books being accidentally bought for very young children.

What kind of content can I expect to find in a CHERUB book?
My books are primarily aimed at kids aged 11+ and the majority of my readers are aged between 12 & 14. These are the content guidelines I use for CHERUB and Henderson’s Boys:

1. There are no sexual swear words in the books. Each book has roughly the same number of mild swear words in it (yes we count them every time!).

2. Characters (including the main character from CHERUB book 8 onwards) do have sex and issues such as contraception and sexually transmitted diseases are touched on. However, there is no explicit depiction of sexual acts beyond kissing and non-genital touching.

3. Other controversial subjects such as drug abuse, human slavery, brainwashing etc are depicted in the books. Although individual characters may espouse this behavior in specific scenes, the overall message of the story is always that these forms of behavior are completely unacceptable.

Cherub Movies & TV

Is there going to be a CHERUB TV series?
We think it would be cool, but nothing has happened apart from some planning.

Is there going to be a CHERUB movie?
A script has now been written but funding is not yet in place so there is no fixed date for the film to actually get made. If all goes well, filming could start within a couple of years and the movie would get released about a year after that. However, movie projects get delayed all the time so don't be surprised if it takes much longer.

Is there going to be a CHERUB video game?
Video games for consoles like Playstation and X-Box cost millions of pounds to develop. They are usually based on movies rather than books, so a CHERUB video game is only likely if a movie goes gets made and becomes a big hit.

In the short term, a CHERUB video game seems unlikely.

When will the movie or TV series be released?
This question depends upon the finance. The most optimistic schedule is that a movie or could begin shooting in late 2017 and be released in 2018. However, it might take much longer than this.

What certificate/rating will a CHERUB movie be?
It's unlikely that anyone will release a movie based upon a kids' book that kids can't watch, so it will probably be a PG or a 12 certificate.

(If you're not from the UK and don't understand this question, you don't need to worry about it!)

How can I audition for a CHERUB movie or TV show?
There are currently no fixed dates for a movie and casting of child characters is unlikely to take place until the movie is ready to start shooting (we could cast someone as James now and find that he's got a beard by the time the movie is ready to be made!).

If there is an open casting, I'll try and put the information into the CHERUB newsletter. You may also want to follow me on Twitter because if I hear anything you'll probably hear much sooner than if you wait for a newsletter.

Will a CHERUB movie be true to the books?
The film makers' stated aim is to make a gritty and realistic movie based upon The Recruit. The last version of the script that I saw changes quite a few plot details from the book, but sticks closely to their spirit.

Will a CHERUB movie be based upon one book or lots of books?
CHERUB books contain quite a lot of material, so the first movie will probably be based upon The Recruit and is unlikely to include content from more than one book.

Will there be sequels?
Like any movie, sequels depend upon the first movie making money. If the first CHERUB movie was profitable, there's certainly a chance of a sequel or sequels.
