It's tough picking books for other people, but every day at least one person sends me an
e-mail that goes something like, "I've really enjoyed all your books, but now I've run out of stuff to read. Can you recommend something else that I'd like?'
I've created this page so that I don't have to keep typing out my answer. I can't guarantee that all my fans will like all of these books, but hopefully it will help someone!
The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
I first heard about this book a couple of years back, but I was put off by the fact that the UK version has the world's lamest cover (I refuse to have it on my website, so I've put the American one up here!)
However people kept recommending it to me and telling me that it was going to be the next big thing. When I finally read it I was blown away. It's the kind of sci-fi fantasy type book that I'd usually avoid, but this one gets everything right.
It's got good characters, it's well paced and there's some really gory violence too! Highly recommended.
Girl, Missing - Sophie McKenzie
A few years back the Richard & Judy TV show did a 'Best Kids Books' episode. The two books picked for older readers were my book The Recruit and this one.
By weird coincidence, the main characters in both books are called James and Lauren. Girl, Missing follows Lauren as she travels to America to find her biological parents.
It's well written and aimed at the same kind of audience as my books. So if you enjoyed CHERUB, you'll probably enjoy this.
The Knife That Killed Me - Anthony McGowan
This is one of those books that got rave reviews and won loads of awards when it came out, but only sold about nine copies.
It's a shame because it's a neat teen thriller that keeps you guessing without being too clever for it's own good.
You might not have heard of this book but it's well worth a punt.
The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo - Stieg Larsson
Older Muchamore Fans Only
It's depressing for a writer like me when someone who writes utter tosh becomes wildly successful. Fortunately, Stieg Larsson's books are great and he deserves his ten gazillion sales!
This book is aimed at adults. It's long, it's got adult themes and graphic sexual violence. But while I wouldn't suggest that a pre-teen or young teen Muchamore fans read this one, it's a great first step into the world of adult thrillers.
I've recommended Dragon Tattoo to loads of my older fans and they've all enjoyed it. Girls in particular love the Lisabeth Salander character.
